Le Tour de France - Le Grand Depart - Yorkshire

Le Tour is only four days away with Le Grand Depart kicking off on Saturday, from Leeds in Yorkshire. Gods Own County is very proud to be hosting the start to this global phenomenon so if you haven't already selected where you are going to view the race from, time is of the essence. This morning, the gazillions of trucks bringing all the teams & equipment to Yorkshire, have docked onboard ferries from the continent. Tour fever has definitely taken hold and we at Estate Escapes are
willing our British riders on to win the first two stages of the race.

and if this isn't enough from Alistair Sawday's Special Places then how about this write-up from Squidbeak

Spring is in the Air at Estate Escapes

Spring is just around the corner and I've not posted a blog in ages! My new year's resolution was to write one a month, and I failed in January but I have a reasonable excuse - sickness! If there's a virus out there, we are bound to have had it since Christmas, fortunately we are all on the mend in the Carver household and looking forward to warmer and sunnier days ahead.

My mission this year is to write about people or places connected to the cottages - www.estateescapes.co.uk, we've got a host of people we're working with who we think are brilliant including the Thai Chef, Tip, who can make fabulous banquets for you on the night or can deliver a delicious curry for four people and have it waiting for you when you arrive at the cottages. I'm trying to suggest as many great ideas as possible for our guests, some more costly than others not all are expensive, some won't cost you a penny.

But, I thought I'd start by mentioning the excellent news that Le Tour de France is coming to Yorkshire in 2014. So just in case you haven't heard, Yorkshire is hosting Le Grand Depart of Le Tour de France in 2014 and isn't that just amazing! The team of people at Welcome To Yorkshire really pulled it out of the bag beating off competition from much warmer climes and bigger, more influential destinations. Well done to them. We are already on a count down.

All the details for the route on Day 1 and Day 2 can be found on the Welcome to Yorkshire http://www.yorkshire.com/ dedicated website http://letour.yorkshire.com/ so to all those yellow jersey chasers out there, we suggest you consider booking your accommodation now... don't leave it too late. For your information, the nearest part of the route to the cottages is going to be in York. We are taking bookings for July 2014.

Talking of bookings, we've been making changes (nothing stands still at Estate Escapes, we don't ever want to be accused of resting on our laurels) to our website. We understand that an increasing number of potential guests would like to be able to book as soon as they see what they like on the internet so we've installed a new booking system courtesy of SuperControl and so far so good. Guests have already started booking themselves in and paying via credit card - that's something else we can do. The booking process is much simpler and easier to use and it means that the availability calendar is absolutely up to date - ALWAYS!

Finally before I dash to pick up the boy from school, we've once again been shortlisted for a local tourism award - Best Self Catering category. The REYTAs as they are known (Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards) are to be held in March and once again the competition is fierce. The judge is coming to take a look on Thursday this week...no need to panic then!

Half Term is just around the corner and we are fully booked, good news for us, sorry if we can't help you this time, get booking for Easter!

Filey Fun

We had a fantastic trip to Filey this summer! Children galore, great sunshine and the best Fish 'n' Chips ever on the promenade. Would recommend Filey to anyone with children, they have a ball.

Estate Escapes Wins Regional Tourism Award

Last night at the 2012 REYTAs (Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards) 2012, Estate Escapes www.estateescapes.co.uk beat off very tough competition to scoop the prize for the best self-catering accommodation in the region.

We won because "the judges felt that Estate Escapes possessed quality at every level. The attention to detail and warmth of welcome was also commended. The information provision for guests encourages visitors to explore the local area and proactively links up with local restaurants etc"

The highly-anticipated awards ceremony took place at the Country Park Inn, Hessle on Thursday 22nd March, 2012 with hundreds of local tourism businesses represented.

It was a very successful night for a number of local businesses including our friends at Drewtons (Farm Shop) just up the road www.drewtons.co.uk and The Star at Sanction (great pub 3 miles away) http://www.thestaratsancton.co.uk/

Hip Hip Hooray, we can now officially say We Are The Best! www.estateescapes.co.uk

David Hockney Exhibition, London

East Yorkshire has had a very exciting start to the year with the opening of the new David Hockney exhibition at the Royal Academy in London.

The sometimes reclusive artist has in recent years chosen to spend much of his time in our part of Yorkshire and his new exhibition, David Hockney R.A. - The Bigger Picture is dedicated to landscapes from his beloved Yorkshire Wolds. Aren't we fortunate that such a globally-recognised talent loves living here.

There has been so much attention (national and international) focussed on Hockney's latest work that East Yorkshire can only benefit from it. Hopefully more people from this country and around the world will come and see for themselves just how beautiful this area really is.

Inspired by what I've seen on the news, I decided to take a drive up to Warter, near Pocklington. It is a gorgeous Wolds village which has inspired much of Hockney's work lately. Despite asking a local for directions to 'The Tunnel', I'm afraid I drove away after an hour being none the wiser. I couldn't locate any of the viewpoints. I've since heard that the regional tourism board are producing a map for us, that should make it easier next time.

Can't wait to see the exhibition, better get my tickets booked pretty quickly. I imagine they will be sold out if I'm not too careful.

For further information about the exhibition please click on the link below:

If you're interested in coming to see the Wolds for yourself and are looking for accommodation, why not come to stay with Estate Escapes www.estateescapes.co.uk
